I had lunch with a dear friend the other day and one of the things we talked about was how quiet and orderly life can be when your kids aren't at home.
We also talked about when they come home and how that quiet orderly life quickly falls into disarray. Having a houseful of teenage girls for Dave Matthews one night, followed by a houseful of twenty-somethings for the Tour de Cure the next reminded me of how order can go by the wayside. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, chaos can be fun, as well as challenging.
It also reminded me about what happens when you lose your job. Your life as you know it comes to a screeching halt. Your days are suddenly your own, for better or for worse. You have time on your hands, even though you are scrambling to find a new job.
What to do then? One of the things that can help is to try and put some order back into your life. Plan your day and organize your job search.
Spend time job searching, time networking, and leave some time for yourself. If you feel so motivated volunteer, walk your dog an extra time or two, read a book, take advantage of the extra time. In some ways, the time is a gift, even though the paycheck is lacking.
Speaking of books, I just read a couple of good ones. Both are on the subject of career change - and they're well worth reading if changing your life has crossed your mind. Here's more on My Life From Scratch and Slow Love - books for the soul.
