When you're hiring workers for part-time jobs, it's important to pay as much attention to the hiring process as you do for full-time employees. That will help avoid some of the turnoever typically association with a part-time workforce.
Cathy McCarthy, spokesperson for SnagAJob.com, share tips for hiring part-time workers:
Focus on the job description: One of the perks of online hiring is that you can write a complete job description versus a printed classified advertisement. Take the time to include exact duties within a position, the kind of previous experience you need and perks of the job. Video components are also becoming more popular. Here are more tips on what to include in a job description: http://employer.snagajob.com/employer/articles/seven-things-every-job-description-needs.aspx
Use screener questions in your automated hiring system: Every employer should include filtering practices in their overall hourly recruitment strategy, ways to "weed out" candidates who do not meet the mark. Develop a combination of assessment questions that are specific enough to identify the qualities you are looking for in a candidate and broad enough to offer you a range of applicants. Broadly, you might ask yourself: What kind of applicant is needed for the culture/atmosphere you foster? What experience level does someone need for a given position? Specifically, you might ask if someone can lift 50 lbs. or work weekends.
Retain your gold stars: During the recession, employers have been able to increase the quality of their workforce. However, these 'A'-level employees may leave for greener pastures when the job market begins to improve. Make an effort to retain your best employees by offering them career growth (talk to them about reaching the next level), flexible schedules (is there a work schedule that helps them with family needs) and offer small rewards for reaching important milestones (a certain sales goal, time with the company, etc.).
