It still amazes me what some job seekers wear - or don't wear to interviews. I'm also surprised when candidates aren't aware of the basics - for example, not walking into an interview with a cup of coffee or texting on your phone.
CareerBuilder surveyed hiring managers and the unusual blunders they reported are interesting, to say the least:
• Candidate wore a business suit with flip flops.
• Candidate asked if the interviewer wanted to meet for a drink after.
• Candidate had applied for an accounting job, yet said he was “bad at managing money.”
• Candidate ate food in the employee break room after the interview.
• Candidate recited poetry.
• Candidate applying for a customer service job said “I don’t really like working with people.”
• Candidate looked at the ceiling during the entire interview.
• Candidate used Dungeons and Dragons as an example of teamwork.
• Candidate filed fingernails.
• Candidate had to go immediately to get his dog that had gotten loose in the parking lot.
For what it's worth, if it was my dog that was loose in the parking lot, I would have gone to get it, too. The lesson in that one, I guess, is to leave your dog at home.
