Career expert Eve Tahmincioglu wrote about free career help yesterday and mentioned a lot of the assistance that's available for job seekers for free.
That got me thinking about the good things that have come out of this terrible job market. I got an outpouring of offers to help when I compiled a list of free or discounted services for job hunters and career changers during the holiday season. Just about everyone I know offered to provide something for job seekers who were hit with the double whammy of being unemployed during a particularly tough time of year.
Giving Back
It's gone on from there though. I was talking to a reporter about it the other day about how there are many of us, who work in the world of jobs and careers, who want to give back, do something to help, and to make a difference in the life of someone who really needs to find a job.
I got one of the most heartwarming emails every last week - from someone who said I literally changed her life. That made me feel good (and I like that feeling), but taking it a step further, there lots of help out there - and that's good news.
JobAngels is a perfect example of that. JobAngels started with one Tweet (a post on Twitter) with the objective of asking those who could to help one person find a job and has grown from Twitter, to Facebook, and to LinkedIn.
People Helping People
Networking is playing a big role, too. I've seen lots of LinkedIn Group members offer to help others and the same on Facebook. People are helping people, as best they can, despite their own tough situations.
Paying it Forward
I gave away some copies of my book, Internet Your Way to a New Job via JobAngels and one of the people I gave a copy to asked if I minded if she paid it forward and gave the copy to someone else who was job searching (she was thrilled to have found a new job).
I thought that was a really good idea, and, in the spirit of continuing to pay it forward and of giving back, I'd like to give away five more copies of the book to those who are job seeking and who agree to pass along their copy to someone else who is looking for work when you're.
Email me or DM with your name and mailing address, if you need job search help and would like a copy of the book to use, then pass forward (to anyone you know who needs help).
Book Sponsors
The following sponsors have very generously offered to sponsor additional copies of the book to job seekers in need who will pass it along when they are done.
If you'd like to sponsor a pass it forward book, please email or DM me. There are more job seekers who would be thrilled to have a copy and who will pass it on to another job seeker when they are done.
