Taking Work Seriously

When my husband, Mike Doyle, About.com's Skiing Guide, goes off to ski in the morning, I'm always supposed to tell him not to work too hard, instead of telling him to have fun.  He's been lucky enough to be able to combine work and play, and to have a job doing something he loves.

That ties in with the comment he made in his blog about taking work seriously: "This is that time in a skier's life, usually before we take work seriously - notice I tie no specific age to when skiers take work seriously - when we dream of living in a ski town."

Of course, work has a place in our lives.  Unless you have a job that combines work and fun, and there are more people than you might think who have been able to do that, we work to earn enough to fund our leisure activities. I do hope though that you have a job you at least like, even if you don't love it.

And if you've thought about wanting to something different with your working life, remember it's never too late.  It's also never too late to not take work seriously, if you're serious about making a change.

You can change careers if you put your mind to it, regardless of how old you are or how long you have been doing what you're doing.  Mike wasn't a kid when he make the biggest, and I think he'd say best, career change of his life.  Sometimes, you have to just do it - regardless of where you are in your career. Here's more on changing careers in midstream, just in case you have something telling you that you need to something different with the rest of your life.
